How to Remove a Watch Battery Held by a Screw Clip

Step 1. In some cases the clip holding the battery in place is fixed with a tiny screw. This may need to be removed in order to release the battery. To do this you will need a small jeweller's screw-driver. The screw head may be a flat drive or a cross drive. You may also find a magnifying glass useful for this.

Step 2. Carefully unscrew the screw. It is sensible to do this on a clean surface that is not smooth, such as a towel, in case the screw drops out and rolls away. Sometimes the retaining clip is under tension, and can 'ping' the screw out never to be found again! To prevent this press down on the retaining clip with a pair of tweezers or your finger while undoing the screw. Once the screw is loose remove it carefully before releasing the retaining clip.

Step 3. Carefully lift out the clip if necessary - or move it to one side so that you can remove the old battery.

Step 4. Again, being careful not to touch the faces of the new battery by using plastic tweezers or some other non-metallic tool, put the new battery in place.

Step 5. Now replace the retaining clip and screw this back in place. This can be a very fiddly and frustrating process and it is very easy to end up losing the screw. It this happens all is not lost. If necessary you can leave the clip unscrewed. Once the watch back has been replaced the battery should stay in position and the watch will probably continue to run. If this does not work replacement screws are available - it will be a case of searching through the screw pack for the one that best fits in your watch as they can vary in diameter and length.
