How to Change the Watch Battery in a Snap Back Watch Case

Step 1. Insert a flat blade such as a pen-knife or our Snap back watch opening tool under the raised lip on the watch case back.

Step 2. Twist the blade so that the back unclips from the watch case. In some watches this will happen easily - in others it can be quite difficult to release the back. To avoid scratching the watch back if the blade slips stick some sticky tape on. It is also a good idea to cover the hand holding the watch with a cloth or towel in case the knife slips.

Step 3. Lift the watch back off the case and place to one side. If you want to clean around the edge of the watch back be careful not to break or lose the rubber 0-ring which helps to keep moisture out of the watch. We do stock a range of o-rings, if the o-ring needs replacing.

Step 4. You can now see the watch battery. This may be held in place with a bar or clip or plastic cover. For help with removing any of these, see our instructions for removing the watch battery.

Step 5. In many watches it is possible to just gently ease the battery out of the compartment as shown here.

Step 6. When fitting the new battery try to avoid touching the battery surfaces with your hands as grease and dirt from your hands can reduce the battery life. Plastic tweezers can be useful for this step.

Step 7. Push the new battery into the compartment so that it sits flat with the positive side uppermost (the side with the text imprinted on it.)

Step 8. Check that the watch is working - if not check the section on Problems afer replacing new battery. If the watch is working you can replace the watch back. Ensure that you have lined up the notch in the watch back case with the winder.

Step 9. Using both thumbs apply an even pressure to the watch back until the case clips shut. In some cases this will close quite easily, but if the case was difficult to open it can require additional pressure to close it. If you cannot close the case with your fingers then see our information on closing a snap back watch case page for further advice.
